A study of histopathology of tumours and tumour like lesions of testis

Abstract
Background: Testicular neoplasms comprise the most common solid malignancy affecting males between the ages of 15 and 35, although they represent only approximately 1 percent of all solid tumors in men. Histopathological examination of tumor will help an assessment of the stage and extent of the disease, both of which have an important bearing on subsequent management and prognosis. Histologic features help to determine higher stage include vascular or lymphatic invasion and spread beyond the tunica albuginea or into the spermatic cord Aim and objective: To study the histopathological features of tumours and tumour like lesions of testis. Methodology: A retrospective (June 2002 to May 2005), prospective (June 2005 to May 2007) histopathological study of tumours and tumour like lesions of testis was undertaken in the department of Pathology, M.R. Medical College, Gulbarga, (5 years). A total number of 59 cases were studied during the period. All the cases were classified as per the WHO classification. Results: Testicular lesions were relatively rare. The incidence of testicular tumours in M.R. Medical College, Gulbarga during the study period was 0.62% of all tumours in males. Testicular tumours constituted about 19.78% of male genital malignancies. Germ cell tumours of testis were the most common tumours comprising of 16 cases and forming 88.89% of all testicular tumours. Tumour like lesions of testis constituted 69.50% of testicular lesions.
