A study of role of MR spectroscopy, perfusion and diffusion for different brain tumors

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Radiology - Year 2019, Vol 9, Issue 3

Abstract

Background: Several imaging modalities can be helpful when performing the initial work-up and follow-up and in the evaluation and treatment of brain tumors. Aims and Objectives: To study evaluation of the role of MR Spectroscopy and perfusion for different Brain Tumors. Methodology: The present study was conducted in the department of Radio diagnosis of Padmashree Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College and Hospital and Research Center, Pimpri, Pune with the aim to assess the value of DWI, spectroscopic and perfusion MRI for evaluation of Brain Tumors. The present study was a hospital based cross-sectional study of the two years duration i.e. (September 2016 to August 2018). Data analysis was done using the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Science) Version 17 for window. Result: It was seen that majority of the patients (44%) were in the age group of 41-50 years of age followed by 51and above (26%). It was observed that there was male predilection in the present study with male: female ratio of 1.38: 1. Contrast enhancing among the malignant and benign tumor was compared and Homogenous and Heterogeneous contrast enhancing was seen among the malignant cases only. The difference observed among the malignant and benign tumor was statistically significant. The association between tumor type and tumor consistency was compared and it was it was observed that solid/ cystic consistency was common in malignant tumor. The difference observed was statistically significant. The mean ADC score among the benign tumor was 1.19±0.29 while among malignant tumor was 0.82±0.16 and the difference observed was statistically significant. The mean NAA of malignant was 14.82±15.24 while that of benign was 9.13±6.23, but the difference was not statistically significant. The mean level of choline among the patients of malignant tumor was 33.56±21.38 while among the benign tumor patients was 35.78±10.85 and the difference was not statistically significant. Mean creatinine level among malignant tumor patients was higher (19.73±16.03) as compared to benign patients (9.91±3.94) but the difference observed was not statistically significant. The ratio of mean NAA/Cr of benign tumor patients was 0.78±0.48 while that of malignant tumor patients was 1.01±0.58 and the difference observed was not statistically significant. The mean ratio of choline/Cr among benign tumor patients was 1.57±1.11 while the ratio of choline/Cr among malignant tumor patients was 4.38±2.41 and the difference observed was statistically significant. Conclusion: Contrast enhancing was statistically significant among the malignant tumor. Mean ADC, NAA and creatinine was decreased in malignant tumor but ADC was significantly decreased. Choline, NAA/Cr and choline/Cr was raised in malignant tumors but the difference was statistically significant in choline/Cr ratio.
