A Study on prescribing and cost pattern of antimicrobial agents in a tertiary care teaching hospital

Journal Title: Indian Journal of Research in Pharmacy and Biotechnology - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 2

Abstract

Now-a-days many drugs are showing resistance followed by ineffective treatment. It has become a major obstacle in treatment. Among many drugs antimicrobials drugs are also highly resistance, Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR). Therefore, in this hurdle, antimicrobial resistance studies are carried out to evaluate the usage and cost of antimicrobials in departments of Tertiary care hospital. The study involves 6 months duration from December 2012 - May 2013 with sample size of 150 patients. Prescribing & cost pattern is evaluated by using WHO prescribing indicators and cost minimization analysis. Among 150 patients 34 are clinically diagnosed with infectious diseases and 3 patients are evaluated by antimicrobial sensitivity test. The nominal number of antimicrobials/encounter was 2.41±1.02. In pediatrics 100% of AMA administered parentally. Ceftriaxone was the mostly prescribed anti-microbial agent (AMA) in all wards with the percentage of 56%. Average AMA Cost/Rx was 1647(INR), injectable AMA Cost/Rx was 1547(INR), cost minimization/Rx considering AAM was found to be 5%. Rise in patient care costs, ineffectiveness in drug prescribing and the emergence of resistance of antimicrobials control and monitoring of antimicrobials use is of growing concern and strict policies of antibiotics should be warranted.
