A STUDY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HAEMOGLOBIN CONCENTRATION IN THIRD TRIMESTER OF PREGNANCY AND BIRTH WEIGHT OF THE BABY

Abstract

Low haemo globin conc entratio n no t only is hazardo us for the mother, it also poses a significant morbidity for the babies. Aim- This stu dy w as do ne to o bserv e the r elatio nship b et we en ha emo gl obin concen tr atio n in th e t hird trim este r of p re gn ancy in a gro up of wo me n an d they w er e followe d up till the bir th weig ht of th e ba bies we re reco rd ed. Mate rials an d me tho d: A hospit al-based cross sectional study was conducted among 100 pregnant women. M at er nal H emo globin lev els du ring th e thir d trimes te r (32-3 6 w eeks)of pregnancy were measured by Cyanmet hemo globin me thod. Th e pa tien ts we re followe d up a nd t he w eigh t of th e babies w er e r ecor de d immedi at ely afte r bir th.Results and observation: T he num ber of low birth w eight babi es increased as th e m at er nal h aemo globin co nce nt ra tion d ecr eas ed. Th e n umb er was high est in sever e mat er nal an emia. The p erc en ta ge of LBW ba bies was slightly more in non-an emic wom en t ha n mildly anemic wom en.Conclusion: M at er nal hem oglobin conc en tr atio n was closely relat ed to th e birth weig ht of the baby. Th er e is a ne ed to closely observ e an d cor rec t th e iron d eficiency an emia in pregnant women.
