A study time of onset, quality of anesthesia used during Electroconvulsive therapy at tertiary health care centre at tertiary physciatric institution

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Anesthesiology - Year 2019, Vol 9, Issue 1

Abstract

Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a well-established psychiatric treatment in which seizures are electrically induced in anesthetized patients for therapeutic effects. Aims and Objectives: to study time of onset, quality of anesthesia used during Electroconvulsive therapy at tertiary health care centre at tertiary physciatric institution. Methodology: This was a cross sectional study carried out in the department of Anesthesiology in the patients undergoing Electro Convulsive therapy at tertiary physciatric institution were enrolled into the study during the one year period i.e. April 2017 to April 2018, the statistical analysis was done by unpaired t-test and analyzed by SPSS 19 version of the software. Result: The majority of the patients were in the age group of 40-50 were 40.32%, followed by 30-40 were 22.58 %, 50-60 were 17.74%, 20-30 were 11.29%, >60 were 8.06%. The majority of the patients were Male i.e. 53.23% and Female were 46.77%. The onset of induction of anesthesia was significantly more in Group II i.e. 53±3.82 as compared to Group I 47±3.45(t=6.05, df=52, p<0.0001). Quality of anesthesia was compared using Outcome measures like were significant more Number of ECTs i.e. 81 and 61(t=4.72, df=52, p<0.0001), significantly more in Group I i.e. Duration of seizure (seconds) 97 ± 26 and 81 ±29 (t=7.82, df=52,p<0.0001), Less Duration of recovery (minutes) - 4.49 ± 2.65 and 6.32 ± 3(t=8.23, df=52,p<0.0001); Less duration of Change in heart rate (%) - 5 ± 13 and 12 ± 13 (t=5.23, df=52,p<0.001); Change in Blood pressure (%) - 9 ± 15 and 21 ± 17 (t=4.12,df=52,p<0.01 ). Conclusion: it can be concluded from our study with respect to onset, quality of anesthesia used during Electroconvulsive therapy the profopol found to be superior as compared to thiopentoene
