A STUDY TO DETERMINE THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN THE KELLGREN-LAWRENCE GRADE AND WOMAC SCORE IN POPULATION WITH OSTEOARTHRITIC KNEE

Journal Title: Stanley Medical Journal - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 1

Abstract

Objective:To determine the association between Kellgren-Lawrence radiological grade and WOMAC scores among population with osteoarthritic knee. Study design: This is a cross sectional quantitative prospective study design of association between Kellgren-Lawrence grade and WOMAC scores among population with osteoarthritic knee with the sample size n = 222 by evaluating the out- patients attending the department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for a period of 4 months from November2016- Fbruary2017 at Madras Medical College, Chennai. A proforma , which included demographic data ,WOMAC score & KL grade was filled. Data analysis: The one-way ANOVA test was used to determine association between Kellgren-Lawrence grade and WOMAC score for right and left osteoarthritic knee population. In right osteoarthritic knee the score pain (p <0.19) and functional activities (p <0.01) of WOMAC scores shows significance with Kellgren-Lawrence score, where stiffness (p<0.097) is not significant with Kellgren-Lawrence score. In left osteoarthritic knee pain (p<0.001), stiffness (p<0.002) and functional activities (p<0.001) of WOMAC scores show significance with Kellgren-Lawrence score. Conclusion:Osteoarthritis of knee is one of most common painful conditions affecting the present day aging population. Clear guidelines with regard to the clinical presentation and radiological assessment are essential in order to make decisions from the available treatment options. This study determines association between and WOMAC score a proven assessment of clinical presentation with Kellgren-Lawrence radiological grading of the osteoarthritis.
