A Survey of Three Years Consultation: 119 Cases of Pyometra, Prognosis and Outcome

Abstract
This retrospective study aimed to describe the incidence of pyometra during a three years period in one of the biggest public veterinary hospital of Brazil and to correlate the prevalence of the disease within breeds, age groups, history of contraceptives and clinical and laboratorial findings. Data were gathered from 119 records of animals attended at the Veterinary Hospital “Governador Laudo Natel” with regards to anamnesis (age, clinical signs, contraceptives administration, and number of previously pregnancy), clinical and laboratorial examinations and outcome. Our results revealed that the mean age at presentation was 8.5 years and the most common clinical signs included vaginal discharge (presented in more than 60% of the bitches), anorexia (60%) and polyuria/polydipsia (30%). Thirty-three percent of the bitches were nulliparous, 13.44% had history data of contraceptive and leucocytosis was presented in 57.1% of them. These data confirmed that pyometra is a middle age disease, nulliparity is a predispose factor and there is no breed-specific risk. Moreover, the high percentage of bitches presented with leucocytosis confirmed the systemic character of the disease and highlights the importance of haematological and blood biochemical examinations in every pyometra case in order to predict time of hospitalization and post-operative care.
