Journal Title: Shanghai Journal of Preventive Medicine - Year 2023, Vol 35, Issue 7
Abstract
ObjectiveTo explore the status of breastfeeding and complementary feeding of infants and toddlers at 6 and 12 months of ageï¼ and to analyze the related influencing factors to inform interventions for breastfeeding and complementary feeding problems in infants and toddlers.MethodsA total of 910 children selected from Pudong New Area of the Shanghai maternal-child pairs cohortï¼ who completed follow-up at 6 and 12 months of ageï¼ were included in the study. A feeding status questionnaire completed by the parents was used to understand the breastfeeding and complementary feeding status of children at 6 and 12 months of ageï¼ and correlation analysis was conducted between the breastfeeding and complementary feeding status and the influencing factors.ResultsThe breastfeeding rate of infants at 6 months was 76.2% ï¼693/909ï¼ï¼ with a higher rate among girls than boysï¼ and the rate of continuous breastfeeding at 12 months was 35.5% ï¼322/906ï¼. The minimum dietary diversity ï¼MDDï¼ pass rate at 6 months was 16.1% ï¼146/906ï¼ï¼ higher in boys than in girls ï¼Ï2 =5.384ï¼ P<0.05ï¼. The MDD pass rate at 12 months was 61.6% ï¼554/899ï¼. The likelihood of MDD failure in 6-month-old boys was 1.499 times higher than that in girls. Feeding of oils and their productsï¼ beverages ï¼fruit juicesï¼ï¼ and snacks ï¼chocolatesï¼ candiesï¼ cakesï¼ cookiesï¼ etc.ï¼ were risk factors for MDD failure in 6â and 12âmonth-old children. Compared with no intake of oils and their productsï¼ beverage and snacksï¼ the OR ï¼95% CIï¼ for MDD failure in 6-month-old infants fed with oils and their productsï¼ beverage and snacks were 5.866 ï¼2.496â13788ï¼ï¼ 4.542 ï¼2.943â7.010ï¼ï¼ and 2.599 ï¼1.243â5.261ï¼ï¼ respectively. Compared with the non-fed groupï¼ the OR ï¼95% CIï¼ of MDD failure in infants aged 12 months fed with oils and their productsï¼ snacksï¼ and sweet drinks were 2.335 ï¼1.736â3.140ï¼ï¼ 1.549 ï¼1.107â2.168ï¼ï¼ and 1.485 ï¼1.116â1.976ï¼ï¼ respectively ï¼P<0.05ï¼.ConclusionsThe rate of continuous breastfeeding in children at 12 months in the Pudong New Area of Shanghai is lowï¼ and the dietary structure of children is unreasonable. Improvements are needed in the introduction of complementary foods. Unhealthy foods such as oils and their productsï¼ beveragesï¼ and snacks are all high-risk factors for MDD failure in children at 6 and 12 months.
