A trend of early epiphyseal fusion in Bengali female as compared to Galstaun's data
Journal Title: IOSR Journal of Dental and Medical Sciences (IOSR-JDMS) - Year 2017, Vol 16, Issue 10
Abstract
The present study is conducted to assess the applicability of age old Galstaun’s data to determine age from closure of secondary centers of ossification in Bengali population. Radiographs of elbow & wrist joints are taken from adolescent females of known age of 9 up to 18 years attending three Medical Colleges of West Bengal. Results are compared with Galstaun’s chart to note a trend of early epiphyseal union, if any. Early fusion is observed in 8% to 13.5% cases with respect to different ossification centers of elbow & wrist. Reasons for this trend may be attributed to early onset of menarche and improved nutritional status to some extent.
