Journal Title: Pathology And Laboratory Medicine - Year 2018, Vol 9, Issue 1
Abstract
Background : The ABO and Rhesus (Rh) blood group systems are important for transfusion of blood and its components, organ transplantation, genetic studies and in medico-legal issues. Despite the long list of other blood groups discovered so far, the knowledge and distribution of ABO and Rh-D blood group are essential for effective management of blood bank inventory. Methods : We retrospectively studied the distribution of ABO and Rh blood group antigens in donors presenting to Bloodbank, Department of Pathology, P.D.U. Medical College and Hospital, Rajkot during the period January 2016 to December 2017. Blood group was determined by commercially available standard monoclonal antisera by test tube agglutination technique. Result : Out of 35380 blood donors 97.2% were males. The frequency of O, B, A, AB and Bombay blood groups were 32.4%, 36.4%, 22.1%, 9.0% and 0.003% respectively. Rh (D) positive and negative blood groups were seen in 93.9% and 6% respectively. Conclusion : B blood group is more common in Rajkot population followed by O, A and AB. Rh positive and Rh negative prevalence were 93.9 % and 6 % respectively
