Journal Title: Pathology And Laboratory Medicine - Year 2018, Vol 9, Issue 2

Abstract

Synovial lipoma is rare benign synovial lesion consist of the mature fat developing in synovium, intraarticular or in the tendon sheath. Commonly present with pain and swelling of joint. Also known as Lipoma Arborescens, it is characterized by extensive villous proliferation of the synovial membrane and hyperplasia of sub-synovial fat. The etiology of this condition remains unknown. We present a 20 year old female patient, who presented with ten year history of pain and swelling in left knee. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of her knee showed the characteristic features of lipoma arborescens. The patient underwent arthroscopic synovectomies and made an uneventful recovery. The sample sent for histopathology examination was grossly 13x11x5 cm villus like yellowish fatty structure reported as being characteristic of lipoma arborescens.
