Changing trend in antibiotic sensitivity and resistance patterns of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from pus at a tertiary care hospital in Bhavnagar: A retrospective observational study

Journal Title: Pathology And Laboratory Medicine - Year 2018, Vol 9, Issue 2

Abstract

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a gram negative rod. It contributes primarily to nosocomial infections. It had many inherent antimicrobial resistance mechanisms. We have limited antibiotic therapeutic options due to the acquisition of resistance mechanisms to antibiotic by this pathogen. This is because of indiscriminate use of antibiotics, failure to complete therapeutic regimens, variations in doses administered and along with over the counter easy availability of antibiotics. Our present study focuses on the prevalence and the change in trend in sensitivity-resistance pattern of P. aeruginosa to antibiotics. In this study, total 2989 pus samples were collected and P.aeruginosa was isolated in 323 samples. After isolation of P.aeruginosa, antibiotic sensitivity testing was performed and analysed by CLSIguideines.Out of these total 323 isolated P. aeruginosa, 182 P. aeruginosa was isolated between July 2015 to Dec 2015 and 141 P.aeruginosa was isolated between Jan 2016 to June 2016. We compare the susceptibility pattern of these two groups of P.aeruginosa to different antibiotics and found that there is decrease in susceptibility of P.aeruginosa to floroquinolone, cephalosporin, and aminoglycosides. There is no change in sensitivity to piperacillin-tazobactam, aztreonam, meropenem, and ceftriaxone-salbactam between these two groups of P.aeruginosa.
