Relapse of typhoid fever – A case study

Journal Title: Pathology And Laboratory Medicine - Year 2018, Vol 9, Issue 1

Abstract

5-10 % of patients treated with antibiotics experience relapse of typhoid fever after initial recovery. A 9 year child with blood culture confirmed Typhoid fever was treated with inj. Ceftriaxone for 5 days with complete relief of symptoms. After discharge he failed to continue any medication. On 23rd day after discharge, he again presented with fever & again blood culture revealed S. typhi. Both the time isolated S. typhi were sensitive to all anti salmonella antibiotics. Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Paratyphi rarely develop antibiotic resistance during treatment. Relapse typically occurs approximately 1 week after therapy is discontinued, but relapse after 70 days has been reported. The present case developed relapse of enteric fever after 22 days of discontinuing antibiotic therapy.
