ABO BLOOD TYPE AND THREAT OF GIT CANCER AND LIVER CANCER IN BANGLADESHI POPULATIONS
Journal Title: Journal of Medical Biomedical and Applied Sciences - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 4
Abstract
Background: The prognosis of several malignancies is associated with blood groups ABOs, however, the mechanisms still remain unknown. The study was designed to explore the possible association among the esophageal cancer, as well as stomach, colon, rectum and liver cancer with blood groups ABO and Rh factors in Bangladeshi populations. Methods: The data of age, gender, ABO and Rh blood group type of cancer patients were collected from Chittagong medical college and from different oncologist chamber. The study sample consisted of 88 liver cancer,178 stomach cancer,125 colon cancer,45 rectum cancer,109 esophagus cancer and 1024 healthy male and female controls were assessed for the association with ABO blood groups. For statistical analysis, Chi-square test was used to assess the relationship between ABO blood groups and oral cancer, where the probability level was fixed at 0.05. Results: High incidence of stomach, rectum and liver cancer patients is associated with blood type A and colon cancer associated with blood type B compared with control group; where the calculated value of 2 is greater than the table value with df (degrees of freedom) 1 at 5% level of significance, p<0.05. Conclusion: Patients with the blood group A and B were more likely to develop gastric and liver cancer. In this regard more studies are necessary to illuminate the role of ABH antigens in the progression of gastric and liver cancers.
