About Cybele cult in the Lower Dniester region (based on excavation multilayered settlement Chobruchi

Abstract

The article deals with one of the most popular ancient cults of the North Black Sea littoral, including the Lower Dniester region – the cult of Cybele. As the basis of this paper were taken two terracotta figurines of Cybele from multilayered Chobruchi settlement. Besides, were used the findings figures Cybele from the Lower Dniester monuments of ancient times. Settlement Chobruchi is situated on the left bank of the Dniester River in the 15-20 km South of Tiraspol and occupies an expensive area of Dniester terraces (Ternovskaya and Parkanskaya) and is immediately adjacent to the floodplain. During the excavation of Chobruchi settlement was investigated lot with total area of 1785 m2, on which were studied 178 household pits, 16 constructions and two burials. The complex of artefacts is diverse and represented by different categories of findings (tools, household items, pottery and others). Among the things of material culture two terracotta figurines of Cybele found in the complexes of the III century BC deserves special attention. These terracotta give reasons, firstly, to refer a multilayered settlement Chobruchi to those barbaric monuments, where analogical findings were first documented and, secondly, to raise the issue of the spread of the cult of the «Great Goddess» among the local population in the Lower Dniester in Late Hellenistic period. Interest in terracotta of the «Great Goddess» is caused by the fact that almost all the monuments of barbaric neighbourhood of Northern Black Sea littoral this cult is unknown or has not been fixed. On this basis, the findings of the two statues of Cybele on Chobruchi settlement are a unique phenomenon.
