Abstract
The article critically analyses the scientific literature and formulates the definitions of the term “abbreviation” in English and defines its general characteristics in modern linguistics; the corpus of the main abbreviated lexical units (taken from the social network Facebook.com) having an illocutionary component has been considered; it has been correlated the abbreviations taken from the social network Facebook.com, with types of illocutionary acts and abbreviations-directives, abbreviations-expressions, abbreviations-asserters and abbreviations-declarations have been characterized.
