ACCORDING TO THE RECORDS AND VAKFIYYE’S THE FOUNDATIONS OF SEHZADE MEHMET

Abstract
In this essay, it will be evaluated the life of The Crown Prince Mehmet and the foundations established by his father Suleiman the Magnificient for the name of him. The crown prince Mehmet, the son of Suleiman the magnificient, was born by Hurrem Sultan in 928/1521. He was appointed to Manisa as governor of sanjak. He died because of an illness in 1543 in Manisa. His corpse was transported to Istanbul and buried in his tomb in Sehzadebasi. To compensate the sorrow in his heart, Suleiman the magnificient orders the architect Sinan to build a tomb and a complex for Sehzade Mehmet. The complex was completed in five years and a mosque, a madrasah, a primary school, printing house (tabhane), a soup kitchen for the poor, a library and the tomb exists in the complex. To make these buildings’ services eternal, Suleiman the magnificient declares charters of vaqfs and so he founds a great complex for his son. To finance this complex and its service, a lot of shops, depots, mills, land, village and other real estate incomes were directly assigned and also another conveyance of the properties were organized in 953/1546.
