Journal Title: International Journal Of Research In Medicine - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Breast carcinoma is the most common malignant tumor and the leading cause of death from cancer in women. Now - a - days, FNAC is being performed as a pre - operative test to evaluate breast lump. FNAC is cost effective and can prevent unnecessary surgery. This study intended to look the frequencies of different lesions in FNAC of pal pable breast lump and to correlate the cytological findings of breast lumps with their histological diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: T his study was carried out in a t ertiary care h ospital a ffiliated with Medical College from period of January 2012 to Dece mber 2012. FNA was performed after obtaining written consent. Cytological diagnosis made on MGG, PAP and HE stained slides. Correlation with subsequent histopathology specimen was carried out. RESULTS : Total 334 cases were included in study. 67.07% of cases showed PBD without atypia and 17.36% cases showed Malignant Cytology. Correlation with histopathology was done in 58 cases which show 100% sensitivity and specificity in all cytology categories. CONCLUSION : Breast cytology is an effective, rapid and reliable method of diagnosis of breast diseases.
