Acute limb ischemia

Journal Title: Przewodnik Lekarza - Year 2006, Vol 87, Issue 5

Abstract

Acute limb ischemia is defined as sudden decrease or worsening in limb perfusion causing a potential threat to extremity viability. Etiology of acute limb ischemia is secondary to emboli, arterial thrombosis, trauma, aortic dissection and venous outflow. Pain is usually the first symptom and paralysis (loss of motor function) is an ominous symptom. The treatment begins with early heparin administration to limit the propagation of thrombus and next urgent surgical intervention or thrombolytic therapy should be performed. Ischemic injury to tissues is the primary cause of mortality in these patients. Ultimately, assessment remains clinical and early treatment is the best indicator of good outcome.
