Acute myelogenous leukemia – recent views on the pathogenesis, diagnostic approach, classification, prognostic stratification and treatment

Abstract
Over the past decade, considerable advances have been made in the understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), as well as in defining new diagnostic markers and prognostic factors. This knowledge influenced the development of novel targeted therapies, as well as helped to identify individual patients likely to benefit from specific treatment methods, including allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. This article presents recent views on the mechanisms of molecular pathogenesis, diagnostic approach, classification, prognostic stratification and treatment in AML. Standard remission induction treatment based on the use of anthracycline antibiotics and cytarabine, as well as consolidation regimens using high-dose cytarabine and postremission management are discussed. Future directions in AML treatment including perspectives of targeted therapy are also presented.
