Abstract
Adam Mickiewicz among editors and censors. Review of: Małgorzata Rowicka, Publishing and Censorship Fate of Adam Mickiewicz’s Works during the Time of the Partitions, Warszawa 2014 The paper is a review of Małgorzata Rowicka’s Publishing and censorship fate of Adam Mickiewicz’s Works during the Time of the Partitions (Warszawa 2014). The treatise is an important contribution to the history of publishing of Adam Mickiewicz’s writings, as well as a collection of documentary material, which constitutes a written record of the culture and social life in the nineteenth century. Its four chapters focus on: the description of chronology and the topography of publishing reception of the poet’s work, the analysis of his “publishing canon” until 1914 and the censorship’s approach to each of his pieces, as well as an attempt to characterize the strategies of publishers and booksellers striving against the political and social situation. Rowicka’s meticulous literary research, a Benedictine style study of found copies of various editions of the bard’s works, numerous statistical summaries and expanded appendixes – all these factors have contributed to the significant value of Rawicka’s study to further research on the nineteenth century.
