Adapting the Scale for Culture of Patient Safety Attitude of Students of Medicine School to Turkish
Journal Title: JOURNAL OF CONTEMPORARY MEDICINE - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 2
Abstract
Aim: The aim of the study was to perform a reliability and validity study for the Turkish adaptation of the scale used to measure the attitude of medical students towards the culture of patient safety, which was developed by Carruthers et al (2009). Materials and Methods,: The Attitudes toward Patient Safety Questionnaire, which was developed by Carruthers et al (2009) was used in this study. The sample comprised a total of 254 medical students of Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University Medical Faculty. The process of adapting the scale to Turkish was based on the method developed by Brislin et al for the use of scales between cultures. Results: According to the results of reliability and validity analyses, the factor structure specific to the scale was determined to show conformity in general. As the factor load was the low value of 0.129, and there was a negative relationship, it was decided to remove two questions. As a result of DFA applied to the remaining 24 questions, the factor loads obtained were above the determined value of 0.40 and the RMSEA value was at an acceptable level (0.05-0.08).The internal consistency coefficients (0.65-0.845) obtained for the total and subfactors formed from the defined items demonstrated that the scale was extreemely reliable. Conclusion: It was determined that the scale developed by Carruthers et al (2009) was a reliable and valid scale which can be used to measure the attitudes of Turkish medical students towards the culture of patient safety.
