Adaptive Contention & Slot Reservation Based MAC protocol
Journal Title: International Journal of Research in Computer and Communication Technology - Year 2012, Vol 1, Issue 7
Abstract
The IEEE 802.16 standard is the basic protocol for data communication in the upstream channel in wireless sensor network. Also the reservation based medium access control MAC protocol is adopted by the IEEE 802.16 standard. The data communication is done in the basic form of slot. In this research the Energy conservation has become a global phenomenon these days especially more apt to Wireless sensor networks. Since Wireless sensor networks use battery operated communicating and sensing devices, conservation of battery energy has become a critical issue. Many MAC protocols have been proposed based on energy conservation as the major criteria with good throughput and low latency. Contention-based, scheduling-based and reservation-based scheme protocols have been proposed earlier that led to improved results where only one contention slot per duty cycle is allowed. Here the unsuccessful contenders have to wait for some more duty cycles for their chance to turn up. In this paper we are proposing a new approach-ACSA [Adaptive contention slot Allocation] mechanism where the width of the contention slot is adjusted with the multiple number of time of one slot width in a data format. Due to this the extra waiting time will be eliminated and the throughput will be improved with the energy level. This technique dynamically adjust the number of contention slots needed to resolve collisions according to the traffic load, considerably improving overall system performance.
