ADEMAFIA E O SANTO AMARO

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to present the Ademafia Institute and point out how, mainly through skateboarding, it influenced a series of community-based social transformations in Santo Amaro, located in the Catete neighborhood, south of Rio de Janeiro - RJ. This community has been affected by deep social inequality caused by governmental helplessness and poor organization of urban space related to neoliberal policies. This study relied on bibliographic surveys and field research to analyze the historical process of occupation of the Santo Amaro community. The researchers conducted interviews which indicated strong mutual collaboration between the residents and the Institute, set off by the skate classes offered to the children of the community. We were able to understand that the efforts of the involved parties have resulted in a resignification of the public space of the Santo Amaro community and have formed a resistance movement, transforming the community into a place of opportunities for youth and improving their quality of life.
