Adherence to meditcation among elderly patients
Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 8
Abstract
Treatment non-adherence, including non-adherence to medications, is a common situation among elderly patients. The reasons for this are complex and include psychological, psychopatology-related and physiological patient-related factors (such as health beliefs, cognitive disturbances, anxiety and emotional symptoms, troubles with vision and hearing) as well as objective factors related to treatment itself, such as poor access to appointments and medications, patient’s interaction with health care system, type of disorder, type and formulation of medications. Proper identification of treatment non-adherence and implementing methods to improve it might exert positive effects not only for treatment effectiveness and safety but might also reduce disease-related patients’ and caregivers’ burden, enhance patients quality of life, improve global effectiveness of the health care system (including mortality, morbidity and costs reductions). Moreover, both patients and doctors satisfaction from the entire diagnostic and therapeutic process might get significantly augmented as well as might a global appraisal of a health care system functioning.
