ADHESIVE JOINTS IN COMPOSITE STRUCTURES – A METHODOLOGY REVIEW

Journal Title: Prace Instytutu Lotnictwa - Year 2016, Vol 244, Issue 3

Abstract

In this article, some of the most popular methods of adhesive peel strength, shear strength and modulus testing, as well as sandwich type composite testing are described. Some of the methods presented were later used in characterisation of film adhesives: 180° peel test of metal – sandwich composite joint using Scotch-Weld AF 163- 2K adhesive and flatwise tension tests of sandwich composite using AF 134-2K as skin-to-honeycomb adhesive, performed in various test conditions. Peel test confirmed that peel strength of metal – laminate joint using AF 163- 2K is unaffected by place of adhesive consolidation. Flatwise tension tests showed that properties of AF 134-2K adhesive remain unaffected by decreasing test temperature to -55°C. However, increasing test temperature to 80°C, combined with moisture conditioning prior to test cause 33% drop in joint strength, followed by increased joint plasticity and a loss of adhesion at film adhesive – honeycomb core interface.
