THE INFLUENCE OF HYGROTHERMAL CONDITIONING ON BEARING STRENGTH OF CARBON-FIBER/EPOXY LAMINATE

Abstract

The bearing strength of quasi-isotrpoic carbon fiber/epoxy laminate was tested by means of ASTM D5961 standard. Two configurations were tested: procedure A, for double-lap shear joint and procedure B, for single-lap shear joint. The effect of environmental conditioning was measured by testing coupons in 80°C, after conditioning for 16 weeks in 71°C/85 % humidity environment. Moisture absorption showed negative effect on laminate bearing strenght – 32 % drop in strength was observed for procedure A, where in procedure B, strength decreased by 13 %. Lower amount of strength loss in case of procedure B was caused by transverse compressive force, induced by fastener torquing with 2,8 Nm torque. Microscopic observations, carried in both visible and UV light with use of fluorescent penetrant, allowed for failure mechanisms assessment and description. <br/><br/>
