AESTHETIC OBJECTS OF THE BORDER: HISTORICAL DOOR KNOCKERS AND RINGS IN ŞANLIURFA

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 53

Abstract

Door knockers and rings, two of the means of daily experience of the people who constitute the mechanism of movement in social life, are the indispensable objects of interest of traditional architecture in Şanlıurfa, In simple terms, door knockers have the same function as today's automatic doorbells. The door rings are designed to help open and close the door. In addition to these functions, door knockers and rings that contribute to the decorative compositions of the doors in various forms created with an aesthetic concern are also important in terms of reflecting the most remarkable examples of Anatolian mine art in construction and decoration. Therefore, these interest objects make possible an aesthetic reading of Anatolian civilizations and cultures through their material realities. On the other hand, this aesthetics concept is not only about artistic sensitivity and perception. While the format and content are questioned in the design process, the preference of these objects, which present the experiment of the daily, also reveals an implicit dimension in the masses behavior. This dimension is now a dimension where political, psychological, socio-cultural and economic readings and accounts are made over these objects. Accordingly, the door knockers and rings, which are reflectors of the national memory, are brought into knowledge not only functional and aesthetic, but also a status symbol, an identity and a gender object as a relationship and communication strategy. However, it is seen that the works related to door knockers and rings in Şanlıurfa are very limited in our day, even though they become knowledge objects of culture with many data codes carried on these objects. With this awareness, in this study, it is aimed to carry out a theoretical analysis on aesthetics and culture through political, economic, psychological and socio-cultural meanings by drawing attention to the rich contents and imagination power of door knockers and rings, which have become knowledge objects of traditional culture in Şanlıurfa.
