Age-related decrease of the indices of aerobic capacity in the former elite rowers and kayakers
Journal Title: Biology of Sport - Year 2008, Vol 25, Issue 3
Abstract
Age-dependent changes of the indices of aerobic capacity were estimated in sixty-six former elite rowers and kayakers aged 30 to 67 years who were divided, according to their present recreational physical activity, into the active (A) and less active (LA) groups. The maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) was higher in the A than the LA group. Compared to latter group, the former subjects demonstrated faster age-related annual reduction of the maximal oxygen uptake expressed in l•min-1 (1.4% vs. 0.6%; p<0.001), the oxygen uptake at the anaerobic threshold workload (1.1% vs. 0.4%; p<0.05), and the maximal oxygen pulse (1.0% vs. 0.4%; p<0.05). Also, VO2max expressed in ml•kg-1•min-1 strongly tended to decline faster with age in the active than the less active subjects (1.2% vs. 0.8%; p<0.1). Values of the oxygen pulse at submaximal workload, the PWC130 index, the anaerobic threshold expressed as %VO2max, and the oxygen cost of work were not significantly affected by age.

Effects of interindividual variation, state of training, and prolonged work on running economy
The purpose of this study was to examine running economy differences between a group of well-trained runners and a group of non-runners. A secondary objective was to ascertain the effects of a prolonged run, near the ven...
Effect of unilateral and bilateral resistance exercise on maximal voluntary strength, total volume of load lifted, and perceptual and metabolic responses
The present study investigated the effect of unilateral and bilateral resistance exercise (RE) on maximal voluntary strength, total volume of load lifted (TVLL), rating of perceived exertion (RPE) and blood lactate conce...
The influence of the allometric scale on the relationship between running economy and biomechanical variables in distance runners
Studies have demonstrated the need for the use of parameters that diminish the effect of body mass, for intra and inter group comparison, in individuals with different masses in order to provide a different analysis on t...
Weight loss is not mandatory for exercise-induced effects on health indices in females with metabolic syndrome
The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of moderate aerobic training on functional, anthropometric, biochemical, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) parameters on women with metabolic syndrome (MS). Fi...
THE COMBINATION OF α-LIPOIC ACID INTAKE WITH ECCENTRIC EXERCISE MODULATES ERYTHROPOIETIN RELEASE
The generation of reactive nitrogen/oxygen species (RN/OS) represents an important mechanism in erythropoietin (EPO) expression and skeletal muscle adaptation to physical and metabolic stress. RN/OS generation can be mod...
