Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2015, Vol 8, Issue 39

Abstract

Declaring themselves with an “identity” manifest in front of the public sphere since the 1980’s, Alevis have entered into an intense campaign so as to define their identity. The definitions of Alevi identity are affected from religious, historical, political and contemporary numerous factors. “Revolt Doctrine” is one of the Alevi identity definition. According to this definition Alevism has resisted to pressures, “reaction” and inequality; Alevis have been defenders of pluralism, mondernity and equality throughout the history. In this study, “revolt doctrine” is examined around two categories. “Revolt to Bigotry” asserts that Alevism regards Turkishness, the leadership of Atatürk, secularism, tolerence and mystical Islam. “Socialist-materialist Revolt” advocates that Alevism considers labor sacred, always keeps equality alive and has disobedience history and syncretic structure.
