Aluminum panel yielding dampers:Application in steel structures

Abstract

Different methods have been used for reinforcing structures, among which retrofitting and decreasing the forces applied on the structure can be referred to. Braces are usually applied for retrofitting flexural frames; but they are not completely reliable systems for withstanding lateral loads. An innovative method was used in this investigation for improving the behavior of this system against lateral loads. Three regular 3, 6, 9 stories steel frames were used along with three different aluminum panel types of X1, X2 nd X3 and four different stiffener types of Y1, Y2, Y3 and Y4. A simple simulation method using ABAQUS software used in the form of capacity curves for evaluating this innovative method. The results show the improvement in the seismic behavior of braced steel frames.
