An alternative to estimate the retention of atmospheric carbon by Bambusa vulgaris var. Schrad vulgaris. ex J.C. Wendl.
Journal Title: Biotecnología Vegetal - Year 2011, Vol 11, Issue 3
Abstract
The estimation of atmospheric carbon sequestration by a woody plant has two alternatives for implementation: by identifying the average annual increase in volume or by determining the appropriate method for calculating the volume stand. The aim of this work was to obtain a reliable and simple method for estimating the carbon in plants and culms of bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris var. vulgaris) existing in a territory. Single samples were taken without replacement in different areas and each culm was measured in total length, outside diameter and wall thickness every two meters from the base to the segment in the upper left to present an interior cavity identifiable, in which the remaining length to the top was measured. Graphical analyses were conducted with the data collected of trends in relations between the variables considered along the culm. By regression analysis with different models and the use of determination coefficient (R2) as an adjustment indicator, we selected those that best allow estimating the solid volume of the culm. After obtaining the calibration models and their results, we prepared a spreadsheet that facilitates to take down the values of the different variables by culm and scion as well as the characterization of the scion average culm. The results are a first attempt to develop a method for estimating the carbon sequestered by the bamboo culm at both as scion and territory to include this element among the criteria for the management plans of this non-wood forest resource.

Effect of dehydration and sucrose on the germination of somatic embryos of Swietenia macrophylla King
In order to improve the germination of somatic embryos of Swietenia macrophylla the effect of the dehydration and the increase of sucrose concentration in culture medium were evaluated. Three times of dehydration (48, 7...
In vitro germination of Dendrocalamus strictus (Rosb.) Nees seeds
The availability of D. strictus seeds is affected by the length and erratic flowering cycle of the species. These seeds also retain their germination only for short periods of time. The tissue culture offers a fast and...
Greenhouse evaluation of the response to black Sigatoka oftwo Musa cultivars by artificial inoculation of conidial suspensions of Pseudocercospora fijiensis
For evaluating the resistance of Black sigatoka in genotypes from breeding programmes different methods have been used, the artificial inoculation of pathogens reproduction structures is one of them. Nevertheless, is ne...
Use of temporary immersion systems for the in vitro multiplication of shoots of Saccharum spp. var. IBP 89-112
With the objective to increase the efficiency in the in vitro multiplication of the sugarcane (Saccharum spp. var. IBP 89-112), temporary immersion systems with a capacity of 3.7 liters were used and the effect of the in...
Adenine sulfate effect on shoot formation of Phaseolus vulgaris L. cultivar ‘CIAP7247F’ via indirect organogenesis
This study aimed to determine the effect of adenine sulfate in plant regeneration from callus of Phaseolus vulgaris L. cultivar ‘CIAP 7247F’. To this, it was added two concentrations (20 and 40 mg l -1 ) adenine sulfate...
