Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2019, Vol 10, Issue 2
Abstract
Objectives: The study analyses rate and reasons for wastage of blood and blood products and trends for reducing blood component wastage.Method: A retrospective study was conducted on the data retrieved from blood banking information system during a period of Jan2012-Dec2016 at Blood Bank, MGM Medical College and hospital, Aurangabad.Result: Total 21610 (voluntary and replacement) blood units were collected and screened for transfusion transmissible disease out of which 2880 units (13.32%) were discarded either because of sero-reactivity, expiry, lowvolume or miscellaneous reasons. The commonest cause was expiry of the components, which included 1937 units (67.26%), especially the platelets because of short shelf life and non-utilization, followed by leakage/damage which constituted 349 units (12.12%) of discarded components. Discard due to sero-positivity constituted 334 units (11.60%), which includes HbsAg(7.88%), HIV (0.76%), HCV (2.95%). 169(5.86%) bags were discarded due to miscellaneous causes and 91(3.16%) bags were discarded due to low quantity
