AN APPROACH TO MIGRATION PHENOMENON IN TERMS OF ETHNIC IDENTITY: THE CASE OF KARS

Abstract
Kars province which is located at the North East Region of Turkey, has been hosted most of ethnic groups historically. Nowadays, five ethnic community which we can cal them as “Azeri”, “Türkmen”, “Kurdish”, “Terekeme” and “Yerli”, live in city. Although the multicultural structure and historical identity, population of Kars is rapidly declining in recent periods. In short, the city faces a major immigration problem involving all ethnic communities. The aim of this study is to show whether there is a relationship between ethnic identity and immigration. The study also analyzes whether the factors affecting the possible immigration decisions of people in different ethnicities (Azeri, Kurdish, Terekeme, Yerli) living in the city center of Kars show differences and / or similarities. According to the results of the research, it is found that there is a meaningful relation between the ethnic identities that the individuals define themselves and the immigration thoughts. According to this, there is a meaningful difference in the idea of migration among ethnic identities at 5% significance level (2= 17,831; p:0,000<0,05).
