An Autoimmune Overlap Syndrome in Diseases of the Thyroid Gland — Terra Incognita of Thyroidology
Journal Title: Міжнародний ендокринологічний журнал - Year 2016, Vol 2, Issue 74
Abstract
Quite frequent thyroid pathology is an autoimmune disease. However, along with common autoimmune thyroid diseases — Graves’ disease, autoimmune thyroiditis, in clinical practice there are autoimmune overlap syndromes, which are characterized by a combination of clinical, biochemical and serological manifestations typical for several diseases of this organ. The term «overlap syndrome» means that one patient has signs of two different autoimmune diseases, which probably have common pathogenesis. While the etiology of autoimmune thyroid disease is not fully known, it cannot be unambiguously decided whether the overlap syndrome is an independent disease or a variant of a particular autoimmune thyroid disease. Study of overlap syndrome is necessary to address the important issue of thyroidology — the development of methods of treatment for this category of patients.
