AN ECO-FRIENDLY METHOD FOR FAT EXTRACT PURIFCATION WITHIN THE ANALYSIS FOR PESTICIDES DETERMINATION IN FISH

Journal Title: MANAGERIAL CHALLENGES OF THE CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY - Year 2018, Vol 11, Issue 1

Abstract

One very important aspect related to organic food is the use of pesticides and fertilizers. Even though no synthetized pesticides are allowed to be used in organic fish farming, such chemical substances can still appear in the meat obtained from controlled aquaculture systems. Water and feed sources, as well as sediments can be already contaminated due to an excessive past management of persistent organic pollutants. They can therefore enter the food chain, reaching up to humans and exposing them to chronical health issues. A way to protect consumers and support the economy is to develop new methodologies for the determination of pesticides in fish meat. The aim of this study was to find a ‘green’ alternative of fish fat purification that enables laboratory analysts to detect and quantify pesticides while protecting and carrying for the environment. The first objective was to test an HPLC clean-up combined with the concentration of analytes through evaporation in a laminar flow cabinet and rotary evaporation. The second objective was to compare and assess the two techniques in order to select the superior option. The results revealed that rotary evaporation is the more convenient choice due to better recoveries of the analytes and fat separation.
