An Empirical Analysis of the Semantic Field of the English Modal Auxiliary Verb May in 19th-century American English exampled in the novel Moby Dick; or, the Whale by Herman Melville

Abstract
This article touches upon the issue of linguistic modality. The presented investigation addresses the notion of interaction between modality and the various forms of the main verbs within matrix predicates. This text focuses particularly on the English modal auxiliary verb may and investigates its semantic fi eld interacting with: the bare infi nitive, progressive and perfect forms of the main verbs, within its scope of operation. The study uses the Kratzerian (1991) semantic fi eld of modal expressions and the concordance analysis method, which was employed to analyze matrix predicates with the modal may excerpted from the novel Moby Dick; or, the Whale by Herman Melville.
