AN EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF HIBISCUS SABDARIFFA CALYX AQUEOUS EXTRACT ON THE GRAVIMETRIC AND BIOCHEMICAL CHANGES INDUCED BY CADMIUM IN THE GILLS OF AFRICAN CATFISH (CLARIAS GARIEPINUS)
Journal Title: Mintage journal of pharmaceutical and medical sciences - Year 2017, Vol 6, Issue 8
Abstract
Objective: The study investigated the effect of Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx aqueous extract on the biochemical changes that occur in Clarias gariepinus maintained in cadmium contaminated water for a period of 14 days. Methods: Thirty catfish were divided into three groups. Group A (control) were maintained in cadmium-free water while Group B were maintained in cadmium contaminated water and Group C maintained in cadmium plus Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx aqueous extract. Results: The results show that statistically there was no significant difference (p>0.05) in the gill/body weight ratio of cadmium exposed fish relative to the cadmium-free control. However, there were significant (p<0.05) decreases in total- and LDL-cholesterol levels respectively in the gills of cadmium only exposed fish (Total cholesterol: 2.65 ± 0.19 and LDL- cholesterol: 0.96 ± 0.20 mmol/l) when compared to control (3.81 ± 0.32 and 2.12 ± 0.28 mmol/l). Simultaneous exposure of fish to cadmium and Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract protected the gills from cadmium-induced decreases in total- and LDL- cholesterol significantly (Total cholesterol, Cd only (2.65 ± 0.19); Cd + HSCE (3.17 ± 0.25 mmol/l); LDL-cholesterol, Cd only (0.96 ± 0.20); Cd + HSCE (1.40 ± 0.31 mmol/l)). Conclusion: The findings in this study suggest that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx aqueous extract has the potential of protecting catfish gills from cadmium-induced decreases in total- and LDL-cholesterol
