AN EVALUATION ON CAVE CULTURE IN TURKISH EPICS

Abstract

Cult is a system of behaviors that people have developed for centuries. In verbal texts and rituals cults are widespread. One of the important cults in Turkish thought life is cave culture. The cave culture has a special place with the string of values it carries in the history of Turkish culture. From the primitive period to the day-to-day, it is integrated with the attributes of asylum, protection, and shelter for humanity. In our work, the existence of the cave culture in the epic texts has been studied. The cave, one of the dominant cults of Turkish culture, plays a key role in the development of events with different functions in the epics. Cave is an important motif especially when epic heroes appear as birth / adolescent / hero. The cave is a place where the individual completes, matures and realizes himself.
