AN EVALUATION ON SLOW CITY (CITTASLOW) MOVEMENT AND TURKEY EXAMPLES

Abstract

Speed that is one of the key words which define the globalization process, causes a transformation of everything and everybody to a suitable structure for becoming faster. In today’s world that is characterised by becoming faster of human and daily living, different reactions start to become widespread against to this action. Principle of these reactions is slow food movement that shows up in Italy in the year of 1980s. This movement has started up by Italians who are stick to their eating and drinking traditions and cultures with announcement of McDonald’s was going to open a branch in famous Spanish Steps in Rome. It’s possible to summarize this movement as a critical view that has started up against to standardization of eating and drinking cultures by fast food habit. Again in line with, after approximate 10 years after this movement, slow city (Cittaslow) movement has started up in Italy under the guidance of Paolo Saturnini with the aim to adapt this movement to cities that have distinctive and special products and local cultures in need of protection. The success of the movement in Italian cities influences small cities in the world that have these kind of features and movement makes progress in a short time and becomes widespread. Turkey is one of the countries that got involved in this movement in 2009 with Seferihisar. Projects and acitivites that are applied as part of slow city membership and criterions in member cities in Turkey, that has 14 members by the year of 2017, constitute the subject of this study. In this direction the aim of the study is to examine relevant practices in terms of slow cities in Turkey and carry out a general evaluation on the success and applicability of the movement in Turkey.
