Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 53

Abstract

Education is among the most important applications of the Early Republican Period (1923-1950) modernity project. Children and young people are not only educated in mind, but also provided physical training with sports activities. This sensitivity has been observed in the projects of all levels and all types of schools which opened in this period, and each one has a sports hall. Apart from these schools, the "Gymnasium School" which serves as a sports hall and the sports stadiums to be used by crowded masses should also be seen as important initiatives in the construction of the modern nation. On the other hand, public squares and parks built in many places of the city, especially the capital of Ankara, are also part of the same ideal. As areas of socialization, these spaces offer new habits to the citizens, young people will be introduced to the newest sports, which will be trained in the city's sports venues. These included tennis, fencing, ice-skating, volleyball, basketball, soccer, horse riding, boxing, swimming and other sports. Sports venues and youth who play sports was published proudly in the magazines such as La Turquie Kemaliste, which introduces the country's contemporary adventure and pace to Europe. Like school buildings and other public buildings also sports complexes, which was built in the 1930's, have been the application area of Western architects who are experienced in this subject. When looked at the historical past of the 19 Mayıs stadium dating back to the Roman period it is a conscious choice to invite Italian Paolo Vietti Violi to the country for the construction of the Stadium. This reveals the decisive and rational attitude of the Republican administration in the construction of the focuses which create urban identity. In the study, it is desired to draw attention to the method of the solution of this problem through the sports places of some schools in the capital city Ankara and the examples of the buildings which are specifically constructed as sports complexes. It is the main argument of the study that how sports spaces are dealt with as part of the Early Republican modernity projects, how they are meant to be understood, in which ideals they are shaped, what values are added to and carried out by cities and urbanities as a place of socialization and emancipation.
