An investigation on the antibacterial efficacy of arecanut extract against Enterococcus faecalis by using confocal laser scanning microscope
Journal Title: Indian Journal of Research in Pharmacy and Biotechnology - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 3
Abstract
Standardization of disinfecting procedures and prevention of reinfection in root canals has been the primary goal of nonsurgical endodontic treatment. Various agents have been tried and tested over time but fail to satisfy the requirement of being non-genotoxic and non-cytotoxic. With this context, our study aimed at evaluating the antibacterial efficacy of arecanut extract against Enterococcus faecalis (E.faecalis) using confocal laser scanning microscopy. The specimens (40 mandibular tooth sections) were divided into 4 groups (Group 1, arecanut treated, Group 2, Chlorhexidine (CHX) treated, Group 3, Normal saline, Group 4, untreated control) and were stained with flourescin diacetate (FDA) and Propidium iodide (PI). The arecanut treated group showed greater pixels of dead bacteria (stained effectively with PI) demonstrating potent antibacterial activity against E.faecalis followed by CHX and normal saline. Thus, arecanut extract can be considered and used as an alternative herbal disinfecting agent with minimal toxic effects.
