Evaluation of methanolic extract of Celtis timorensis for nootropic activity
Journal Title: Indian Journal of Research in Pharmacy and Biotechnology - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 3
Abstract
The present study was undertaken to investigate the nootropic activity of leaves of methanolic extract of Celtis Timorensis. Three doses of extracts 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg and piracetam (50 mg/kg, i.p.) were administered to separate groups of mice. The extracts and standard drugs were evaluated by using scopolamine (0.3mg/kg) and aluminium (40 mg/kg) induced amnesia on elevated plus maze and acetylcholinesterase enzyme levels of were also evaluated. Methanolic extracts of Celtis timorensis and Piracetam were shown significant (**p<0.01) reduction in transfer latency which indicate improved learning and memory in mice. Acetylcholinesterase enzyme levels were also showed the significant reduction in mice brain similar to Piracetam, they might be acting through the same mechanism by elevating acetylcholine levels in brain. This confirms that our extracts are showing nootropic activity by enhancing acetylcholine levels in mice brain.
