AN OBSERVATIONAL STUDY ON ORALLY INGESTED POISON CASES IN ATTEMPTED SUICIDE AT TOXICOLOGY UNIT OF IMCU, STANLEY MEDICAL COLLEGE

Abstract

Background: This study was taken up to describe orally ingested poisoning cases in attempted suicide. Methods: This was an prospective observational study done from February2015-August 2015 in Government Stanley Hospital,at toxicology unit of IMCU.The study included 100 patients above 13 years of age presented with alleged history of ingestion of oral poisons for commiting suicide,we excluded tablet poisoning,accidental ingestion and suspected or proven homicide cases.A detailed study on each patients occupation, income,education,reason for commiting suicide,history of underlying psychiatric disorder etc. are undertaken.Data recorded and analysed. Results: Among 100 patients we studied, 53 were males and 65 patients belongs to 20-39 age group. Among 100, 61 were from low socioeconomic status.Out of 100 patients 8 patients expired ,in that 5 were males. Conclusions: Our study concluded that males are dominating in number in patients presenting with alleged history of consumption of orally ingested poisons in attempted suicide cases in Government Stanley Hospital and suicidal intention is more strong in males.
