An overview of child abuse and the child protection system in Australia.

Abstract
The past decade has seen State and Federal Governments in Australia initiate inquiries into the protection and care of children, such as the Australia-wide Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. This has brought child abuse, particularly within the context of trusted institutions into the public arena. With more than 135,000 Australian children in the child protection system in Australia, the ongoing crisis has achieved community awareness and has provided the impetus for writing this overview from a practitioner’s perspective. As a wealthy nation, the recent exposure of Australia’s failings should serve as a warning for other countries which deny the scale of child abuse in their own backyard as it this attitude that forms the biggest barrier to protecting children. A rights’ based approach using the Convention on the Rights of the Child as a framework is recommended as the exemplar needed for a paradigm shift and the development of an effective child protection system.<br/><br/>
