ANAEROBIC EFFICIENCY OF 14-YEAR OLD FEMALE VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2013, Vol 29, Issue 2

Abstract

Background. Anaerobic efficiency plays a fundamental role in determining the results in team sports games. For these reasons, the control of changes in this area is of vital importance in the process of planning and managing the process of sports training. The aim of this study was to evaluate the anaerobic efficiency of 14-year-old female volleyball players representing three teams and to verify the validity of the use of 30-second Wingate test version at early stages of sports training in female volleyball. Methods. The study involved 49 female volleyball players at the age of 14 years, representing three teams. To assess anaerobic efficiency the standard Wingate test was used. The results were subjected to statistical analysis (analysis of variance ANOVA) using the software package STATISTICA v. 10 (StatSoft, USA).Results. The relative values of total work and the maximal power output obtained by three tested volleyball teams were higher or similar in comparison to the results obtained by 16-year-old female volleyball players. There were obtained very high values of Pearson’s correlation coefficients between body mass quantities of the total work and maximal power output. The research showed almost complete correlation between the values of total work and maximal power output. Conclusions. A very high correlation between the absolute values of total work and maximal power output indicates the lack of justification for the use of 30-second version of the Wingate test in the assessment of anaerobic efficiency of young volleyball players. Reliable assessment of anaerobic efficiency level in volleyball can be based on two indicators - maximal power output and time of maximal power attainment, resulting in a 10-second Wingate test version.
