Anaesthetic management of a patient with sick sinus syndrome for vaginal hysterectomy
Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Anesthesiology - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 2
Abstract
Background: Sick sinus syndrome is a generalised abnormality of cardiac impulse formation that may be caused either by an intrinsic disease of the sinus node, which makes it unable to perform its pacemaking function, or by extrinsic factorsIntrinsic factors include degenerative fibrosis, ion channel dysfunction, and remodeling of the sinoatrial node.Extrinsic factors can be pharmacological, metabolic, or autonomic. It commonly affects elderly persons.Abnormalities encompassed by this syndrome include sinus bradycardia, sinus arrest or exit block, combinations of sinoatrial and atrioventricular nodal conduction disturbances and atrial tachyarrhythmias. Diagnosis of sick sinus syndrome can be difficult because of its nonspecific symptoms and elusive findings on an electrocardiogram or a Holter monitor. Here, we present the perioperative management of an elderly patient with sick sinus syndrome posted for vaginal hysterectomy.

Efficacy of dexmedetomidine infusion in patients undergoing tympanoplasty surgery under local anaesthesia
Background: Tympanoplasty is done under local anaesthesia using a microscope and require good surgical field visibility. Dexmedetomidine is a highly selective α2 adrenergic agonist used for analgesia and sedation, sympat...
A comparative study of ropivacaine 0.5% and bupivacaine 0.5% in combination with fentanyl in supraclavicular brachial plexus block
Background: Regional anaesthesia now occupies an important position in anaesthesia now days and has undergone advancements both in techniques and drug availability. Regional anaesthesia techniques are an important assort...
Comparison between ultrasound-guided transversus abdominis plane block and conventional ilioinguinal/iliohypogastric nerve block as post-operative analgesia for nilateral open inguinal hernioplasty under spinal anaesthesia
Background: Open inguinal hernioplasty is commonly performed under spinal anesthesia. Transversus Abdominis Plane (TAP) block or ilioinguinal/iliohypogastric (IHN) block are used for postoperative pain relief in these pa...
Effects of addition of dexmedetomidine to bupivacaine on the block characteristics of brachial plexus block by supraclavicular approach
Background: Dexmedetomidine, a non-opioid adjuvant to neural blockade supposed to improve the quality of nerve blockade. This study intends to compare the effects of addition of dexmedetomidine as an adjutant to bupivaca...
A comparative study of efficacy of different doses of fentanyl in the prevention of incision related tachycardia in children
Background: Pain is a subjective sensation and assessment of pain during general anaesthesia is a difficult preposition. It can only be assessed indirectly by noting the features of a stress response like tachycardia and...
