Analysis of epidemiological features of food-borne diseases through active surveillance in Wenchangï¼ Hainan Province from 2017 to 2021
Journal Title: Shanghai Journal of Preventive Medicine - Year 2023, Vol 35, Issue 7
Abstract
ObjectiveTo understand the epidemiological and etiological characteristics of food-borne diseases in Wenchangï¼ Hainan Provinceï¼ and to analyze the suspected food exposure sites and sources so as to provide scientific data for early prevention.MethodsThe data of food-borne disease casesï¼ including basic informationï¼ timeï¼ populationï¼ regionï¼ suspected exposed foodï¼ etiologyï¼ etc.ï¼ from the sentinel hospitals of the surveillance systems in Wenchang from 2017 to 2021 were statistically analyzed.ResultsA total of 2 219 food-borne disease cases were collected from 2017 to 2021. The male-to-female sex ratio was 1.2ï¼1ï¼ and there was no significant statistical difference ï¼Ï2=5.732ï¼ P>0.05ï¼. Cases were mainly concentrated in children aged <7 years ï¼43.26%ï¼ï¼ followed by 7 to 18 years ï¼15.41%ï¼ï¼ 19 to 30 years ï¼11.72%ï¼ and >60 years ï¼11.36%ï¼ï¼ and there was a significant statistical difference ï¼Ï2=168.125ï¼ P<0.001ï¼. The highest number of cases were found in preschool children ï¼36.05%ï¼ï¼ followed by students ï¼17.49%ï¼ and farmers ï¼16.18%ï¼. The peak incidence occurred from July to November ï¼54.44%ï¼. The suspected exposure foods reported in the monitored cases were mainly vegetable foods ï¼17.49%ï¼ and mixed foods ï¼17.08%ï¼. The exposure sites were primarily households ï¼76.30%ï¼ and catering services ï¼13.56%ï¼. The positive rate of pathogens was 12.26% in 1085 tested samplesï¼ and there was no statistically significant difference in the annual detection rate ï¼Ï2=1.086ï¼ P>0.05ï¼. The main pathogens of food-borne pathogens were Salmonella ï¼9.95%ï¼ï¼ followed by norovirus ï¼2.03%ï¼ and rotavirus ï¼0.28%ï¼.ConclusionThe surveillance of foodborne disease cases in Wenchang shows seasonal peak patterns according to population and pathogen epidemiological features. The main affected groups are preschool childrenï¼ studentsï¼ farmersï¼ and the elderly. The exposures are mainly related to vegetable foods and mixed foods in households and catering service establishments. Efforts should be made to strengthen food safety awarenessï¼ health educationï¼ and supervision targeting residents and food operators in order to reduce the incidence of foodborne diseases in the Wenchang area.
