Analysis of heart rate variability in racing Purebred Arabian horses depending on the type of effort and training advancement

Journal Title: Journal of Animal Science, Biology and Bioeconomy - Year 2017, Vol 35, Issue 4

Abstract

The aim of the study was to analyze the heart rhythm variability of pure-blood Arabian horses, depending on their advanced training and type of exercise. The study comprised 20 horses from SK Janów Podlaski stud, of which 10 mares and 10 stallions aged 32–37 months. The exper-iment was carried out during a period of 8 months. During the first three months, the horses partic-ipated only in trainings conducted 6 days a week. Then, horses were transported twice a month to Warsaw to the Służewiec Track, where they additionally took part in races. The heart tests were carried out with the Polar RS800CX telemetry devices. In three 15-minute periods, resting, post-workout and restitution values of heart rhythm variability were studied. The results of the study, after elaboration and detailed analysis, allowed us to conclude that the parameters of heart rhythm variability give many possibilities to assess the level of training advancement and intensity of horse effort. The increased intensity of effort increases the activity of the sympathetic system, responsible for mobilization of the organism. As the training cycle progresses, this activity de-creases and the activity of the parasympathetic system responsible for rest increases. It is best to evaluate the intensity of workout and training progress using HRV parameters at rest on the day following the training or during rest periods, but only during resting tests can you limit yourself to the measurement of parameters describing the activity of the parasympathetic system as representa-tives of other HRV parameters. This research will make it possible to assess the correctness of the progressing training process.
