ANALYSIS OF MICROMECHANICAL AND TRIBOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF nc-WC/a-C AND nc-WC/a-C:H NANOCOMPOSITE COATINGS

Abstract

In the article, micromechanical and tribological properties of nanocomposite coatings nc-WC/a-C and nc-WC/a-C: H were presented. Coatings were deposited by magnetron sputtering on baseline and oxigen-hardened Ti6Al4V titanium alloy. Both coatings contain tungsten carbide nanoparticles nc-WC of different sizes 2 to 6 nm imbedded in an amorphous carbon matrix. The effect of carbon matrix – hydrogen free (a:C) and hydrogenated (a-C:H) and the influence of substrate strengthening on the mechanical properties of coating- substrate systems were tested. The Nc-WC/a-C coating has higher hardness 18.4 GPa than nc-WC/a-C:H - 14.1 GPa. It was established that the coating with hydrogenated carbon matrix has better wear resistance than the WC/a-C coating. For both systems with oxygen-hardened substrate, a low coefficient of friction 0.1 to 0.12 wear was measured.<br/><br/>
